Maine Roller Derby Weekly standings recap

New England Roller Derby ReportIn an effort to help new fans better understand where Maine’s teams stand in relation to one another we’ll be recapping the current flattrackstats.com scores. We’re including all active teams.  Even the B team’s for the different leagues.  I believe it  gives a better over all picture of where we are statewide.

The ranking score we look at is the “North America” score.  This list includes all teams, not just full WFTDA.

First a little about the Flat Track Stats system.

Flat Track Stats (FTS)  use a ranking system that works not on wins / losses but rather by the level of difficulty in the games played.   Simply doing a wins/loss standings doesn’t truly reflect who’s playing at what level. FTS uses a predictive algorithm to determine the win probability for a set of teams.

If a team performs better than the prediction, then it’s rating will go up, if it performs worse, it’s rating will go down. Please note, that this means ateam can win, but still have its rating go down if it did not win by as much as we predicted. Similarly, a losing team can have its rating go up if it performed better than expected. (From the FTS website)

Now, on to our ranking list!

With its better than expected win this weekend, Maine Roller Derby increased its top spot lead by 19.7 points. They went in as a slight underdog.  Green Mountain went in to the weekend at 729.36 to Maine’s 692.8.

Our first position change comes with Rock Coast Rollers. Rock Coast with its commanding 256-54 win over New Hampshire Roller Derby.  Because they performed better than expected they scored more points towards their rankings.

Not only did RCR over take Bangor for the second spot, Bangor slipped a little despite picking up the win.  Flat track stats correctly predicted the win but Bangor did not win by the predicted margin.  If we looked at the Daisy Cutters score we’d see an increase because they performed better than expected.

Team name, current score, change since last week.

Maine Roller Derby 712.5 19.7
Rock Coast Rollers 630.6 17.6
Bangor Roller Derby A 621.5 -7
Breakwater Blackhearts 561.1
Central Maine Roller Derby 559.4 -8.8
MRD Old Port Brigade 537.4  4/23 Score not yet updated
Aroostook Roller Derby 533 5.9
Bangor Roller Derby B 528.5 5.7  4/23 Scores not yet updated.

Coming up next week we’ll see Central Maine take the track again against Western Mass Destruction of Pioneer Valley Roller Derby.  The last time these two teams met, CMD took the win 218 to 126.  A similar peformance this time around should net around 12 points.  They are going in as the underdog so even a close game should provide some ranking points.

Maine Roller Derby goes up against Roller Derby Quebec’s Les Duchesses in what may be their toughest challenge of the season.  This Quebec team is notoriously strong (As is MRD).  I don’t expect a blowout in either direction.  Rankings aside this should be an incredible match up to watch.  We’ll have that live of course!  NERDerby Live Stream

About Chad Nute

On April 12th, 2014 I attended my first roller derby bout. My wife had wanted to go and suggested we make the trip over. I had the pleasure of watching Bangor Roller Derby take on Pair O' Dice City rollers. Bangor took the win 287-50. This blog will be covering not only bouts here in Maine but also New England and New Brunswick.
